Last year in the UK, the household total debt on cars rose to around £40bn according to a report from the Finance & Leasing Association in June, bringing new car sales close to beating an all-time record of £2.58m in 2003. We look at some fascinating facts about driving, provided by Ageas Insurance:
- On average less than half of all driving tests result in a pass! Recent Government statistics show that the success rate is 47%.
- If you could lay all the roads in the UK in a straight line, you would go into space and past the moon. That’s 238,855 miles from earth.
- 1935 was the first year that the driving test was compulsory and 246,000 candidates put themselves forward for it.
- The first test for an automatic vehicle was introduced in 1969.
- The record for sitting a theory test is 90 times! A woman from Southwark, London spent nearly £3,000 on the test before she was able to pass.
- A 42 year old man from Stoke holds the record for the most failed practical tests. He finally succeeded on his 37th attempt.
- In 1934, there were just 1.5 million cars in use, but more than 7,000 people were killed on the country’s roads. Within a year of the introduction of the test, the number of deaths had fallen by 1,000.
- Singer Ozzy Osbourne took 19 attempts to pass his driving test.
- In Mexico you don’t need to take a driving test, just buy a licence for around £30.
- In Japan you would fail your test if you don’t bend down low enough to check for cats under your car.
