New UK immigration laws in force from 1 January 2021

Freedom of movement within the UK and the EU ended on 31 December 2020 and the UK has now introduced a points-based immigration system, treating EU and non-EU citizens equally. Anyone coming to the UK to work, excluding Irish citizens, will need to apply for permission in advance.

Under the new points-based system, anyone coming to the UK for work will need to meet specific requirements to score points. Visas will then be awarded to those who gain enough points. Currently, a total of 70 points is required to be able to apply to work in the UK.

EU citizens and their family members living in the UK at 31st December 2020 are eligible to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme and will have until 30th June 2021 to make an application.
Skilled worker route – We understand that you need to have a sponsor licence to hire most workers from outside the UK. This does not apply when hiring Irish citizens or EU citizens eligible for status under the EU Settlement Scheme.
