MoneySupermarket has found that the UK’s worst drivers may be the owners of more expensive vehicles.
Research figures show that drivers of luxury cars, such as Lexus and Land Rovers, are more likely to make an ‘at fault’ claim on their insurance, than other car owners.
11 million car insurance quotes from the past year were analysed to calculate which drivers made the most and which drivers made the least ‘at-fault’ claims from motor accidents.
The UK’s best drivers
The drivers of these cars were shown to have made the least amount of claims
Car | Claims per 1,000 drivers |
Smart | 78.6 |
Fiat | 79.4 |
Subaru | 79.7 |
Peugeot | 83.2 |
Renault | 85.8 |
As well as being some of the smallest vehicles on the road, results show that Smart cars also are driven by some of the UK’s safest drivers.
You may be surprised to see Subaru was shown to be one of the safest, considering the reputation as being a ‘boy racer’ car.
The UK’s worst drivers
The drivers of these cars were shown to have made the most at-fault claims.
Car | Claims per 1,000 drivers |
Lexus | 111 |
Land Rover | 110.1 |
Kia | 109.2 |
Volvo | 107.9 |
Audi | 105.2 |
How does a claim affect your insurance?
As with any type of insurance your premium is based on how much of a risk your insurer rates you as, i.e. how likely they think you are to make a claim.
If you have recently made a claim, especially an ‘at-fault’ claim, then you can expect your premium to increase as insurers will rate you as a higher risk. You may also lose your no claims bonus as well if you haven’t protected it.
You should also be aware that most insurers require details of any claims within the last 5 years, meaning you may be paying a higher price for a few years to come yet. How much more you pay will depend on your car and the details of the incident.
