You may have seen on the news the Man Engine has been in various locations around Cornwall over the past week and you have until Saturday to catch the huge Cornish miner on its historic tour.
The 10-metre-plus miner has been constructed to mark the tenth anniversary of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape being added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.
Wednesday, August 3
Camborne, 11am, transformation and procession through Trelowarren Street, ending in Commercial Square. The Camborne event will include the only appearance of the Levantosaur dinosaur, a produce market and plenty of Cornish food from cream teas to saffron buns; processing to King Edward Mine, Troon, at 3pm; celebrating the Tregonning and Trewavas mining areas at Godolphin House at 6pm.
Thursday, August 4
Hayle, Foundry Square, 6pm, transformation.
Friday, August 5
Penzance, 5pm, transformation and procession. Free family fun and festivities from 10am will keep you entertained until The Man Engine arrives at 5pm. Locals and visitors are invited to dress up as Steampunk-style Miners & Maids. There is a “Mine Cart” Soapbox Derby right down Market Jew Street. With town trails, music, street food, Heritage Hub and kids’ Creation Station, there is something for everyone. The Man Engine will be met by “Humphry Davy” with a giant safety lamp to honour the Penzance-born inventor’s critical role in mining and the industrial revolutions of the day. At 8pm, Jubilee Pool, Penzance, which has recently undergone a £3 million renovation, will host the Grand Man Engine Ball, starting with a cabaret featuring burlesque dancers and a titillating troupe from Fabulous Fandangos and then continuing until 3am with music from DJs Ry Spenceley, Louis Vanhinsbergh, Kristoff Moine and Andre Beatbreakerz.
